Lenovo x3950 X6 Achieves World-Record SPECvirt Benchmark

The Lenovo x3950 X6 eight-processor system delivered a world record result in the SPECvirt_sc2013 benchmark test published December 3, 2015. You can read the detailed results on SPEC.org. This continues the X6 family’s string of number one, or world-record benchmarks since its launch in January, 2014. It is also, apparently, the only award this month not won by Taylor Swift.

The SPECvirt_2013 is the industry-standard virtualization benchmark. It measures the virtualization performance of a given system by scoring the throughput of multiple workloads across a given number of virtual machines (VMs). According to the SPEC.org site, “SPECvirt_sc2013 measures the end-to-end performance of all system components including the hardware, virtualization platform, and the virtualized guest operating system and application software. The benchmark supports hardware virtualization, operating system virtualization, and hardware partitioning schemes”.

The score gives an idea as to how many fairly heavyweight VMs you could run on the x3950 X6. It’s the common use case for virtualization for enterprise-class servers. (Mix of enterprise workloads, legacy workloads, all running in a virtual environment on a single host).
