Imagine your average weekday – you wake up, eat breakfast, commute to work, start your workday, grab lunch and eventually head back out into traffic to get home, spend time with family, eat dinner and get some shut eye. You know the routine. Now imagine if everything about your day was 40 percent faster, easier and more effective. What could you do with that time you gained?
For professionals at the end of their standard product lifecycle, we are bringing to market two workstations with up to 43% faster performance than what you have today*. We understand the importance of increased performance, speed and power for your projects and are announcing the latest versions of our ThinkStation P920 and the ThinkStation P720.
Lenovo will be bringing this new technology straight to you as we hit the road to showcase our workstations across Europe, Asia, and North America in the coming weeks. Stop by and check out our powerful workstations that deliver increased flexibility for the most mission-critical workloads and new features, including:
- The new Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors – offering industry-leading speed of up to 3.6GHz;
- Increased 6-channel DDR4 memory with ECC per socket to support the heaviest computational needs;
- Faster memory speeds and support for up to 28 cores per CPU for professionals;
- Full RAID support for NVMe drives – a necessity for those customers who are tackling reading and writing large CAD project files; and
- The latest NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics.
“Intel worked closely with Lenovo to bring our newest Intel Xeon processor technology to the Thinkstation P series workstations, and deliver the performance, reliability and optimized acceleration that Lenovo’s clients need,” said Trish Damkroger, Vice President/GM, Data Center Group, Intel. “Our latest silicon technologies, combined with Lenovo’s innovations in the powerful new ThinkStation P920 and P720, offers a new level of performance for professional users across a broad range of industries.”
Faster is Always Better – The ThinkStation P Series Meets Entertainment Industry’s Demands
Artists and creative professionals can’t afford for their workstation to be a bottleneck in production. Projects today are often so complex and challenging that they must be segmented into smaller portions so data can be manipulated in as close to real-time as possible. For example, when designing a character, the detail may be so great that each part of that character – an ear, an arm or the hair – must be created separately. However, using the latest technology of the Lenovo ThinkStation P series, artists can work in context with larger, more complex assets, and are able to complete projects faster and more efficiently than ever before.
“At the Vanity, the main tool we rely upon for demanding projects is Autodesk’s Flame software,” said Naveen Srivastava, VFX Supervisor at the Vanity. “Flame is a very powerful tool which makes it one of the most resource-intensive solutions used in production today. We can’t wait to experience the enhanced performance of the new ThinkStation P920. We love the performance we’ve seen out of the über-powerful P910 and we can’t wait to take advantage of the additional power of the P920.”
The ThinkStation P920 and P720’s raw multi-CPU and GPU power offers fast processing of complex datasets, calculation intensive rendering, editing and VR stitching. This power provides professionals the speed and performance required – within hardware that is reliable every time. The result: complete consistency, with no downtime or interruption.
First Stop – Trojan Horse Was a Unicorn
Our first stop on the world tour to showcase these powerful new workstations will be Trojan Horse was a Unicorn (THU) in Tróia, Portugal, a six-day conference for creative professionals and students within the production, animation, gaming, art and design worlds. Lenovo has been a dedicated sponsor of THU for several years, and we are excited to take on even more hands-on opportunities this year. We’ll be teaming up with the top visual effects school, Gnomon, to showcase our latest technology in the co-labs.
“We take pride in the success of our students,” said Eric Miller, CTO at Gnomon. “Educating and cultivating future animators, VFX professionals and digital artists is not just about learning the tools used in production, it’s also about teaching students how to avoid production bottlenecks and missed deadlines. The increased performance and capabilities of the ThinkStation P920 and ThinkStation P720 will allow artists to focus on the work and not the work around.”
New Workstations Give New Power to AEC Professionals
While those in the media and entertainment space deal with complexity throughout the production process, AEC professionals are dealing with it through visualization, simulation and analysis of complex CAD data. Similarly, these users have previously executed design and simulation in small sections and then produced as a completed assembly using an outside render farm. The ThinkStation P920 and P720 will allow professionals to create in house regardless of the complexity of files – increasing security of files and decreasing project timelines.
One company paving the way in the AEC industry is MX3D. One of our ThinkRevolutionists, MX3Ddeveloped robotic 3D print technology, with some of their most recent work resulting in software and tools that can print metals in mid-air.MX3D is currently using these tools and the Lenovo ThinkStation P900 series to 3D-print the world’s first, fully-functional steel bridge.
“To invent and build something that has never been accomplished before is a challenge and also a huge risk,” said Tim Geutjens, co-founder and CTO of MX3D. “Being able to take advantage of the newest Lenovo technology allows us to incorporate IoT, generative design and VR to help reduce that risk – freeing us to take our vision and make it a reality by ensuring all of our crucial calculations are executed smoothly.”
MX3D’s work – as well as its partnership with Lenovo – will be showcased at this year’s Autodesk University Japan. Professionals from industries such as manufacturing, building and civil engineering will have the opportunity to jump, fully immersed, into the world of MX3D through a VR experience. Attendees will be transported to Amsterdam and able to walk across the bridge and understand the complexity and technology behind its construction. In addition, Lenovo will be showcasing the remarkable things you can do, highlighting the smallest workstation in the world, the ThinkStation P320 Tiny, all the way up to the all-powerful ThinkStation P920.
When Size and Speed are Crucial – Catering to Our Oil & Gas Users
As you can imagine, within the complex worlds of seismology, geosciences and energy exploration – size matters and speed is crucial. The ability to glean extreme detail from incredibly large datasets is the differentiator between seizing the opportunity to find oil or lose it to someone else. Being able to articulate sizeable quantities of information in a timely manner requires a workstation that can handle a large amount of memory and an enormous amount of computational capacity. Enter the ThinkStation P920. Much like their professional counterparts in AEC, oil and gas professionals will reap the benefits of this ISV tested and certified workhorse, supporting up to 2TB of memory with the power to support up to three NVIDIA Quadro GP100 GPU for maximum performance.
Lenovo will be in Houston later this month for the 87th annual SEG Int'l Expo at booth #206. Lenovo will showcase high-performance computing solutions across the workstation portfolio - from mobile to desktop to data center. Working with industry-leading software providers, the ThinkStation P920 will demonstrate visualization and real-time manipulation of seismic data sets larger and faster than ever before.
The ThinkStation P920 and P720 – featuring onboard M.2 SSD support and the fastest I/O technology in the industry – will be available starting in late October. Follow along as we tour the globe and stay tuned as we continue to expand the capabilities of our workstations with new offerings and advanced Intel technology throughout the end of the year.
